Orchestra Director Angelo Moreno
The DHS and Holmes Orchestras Director, Angelo Moreno, is a graduate of UC Davis where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Orchestral Conducting under the direction of Dr. D. Kern Holoman in the Fall of 2002. He also received his Teaching Credential in Music Education from Sacramento State University. During his time at UC Davis, Mr. Moreno served as Principal Second Violin and was a loyal orchestra member for six years. He also participated for six years as Concert Master and soloist of the UCD Baroque Ensemble under the direction of Phebe Craig and Michael Sand.
Mr. Moreno, Director of the Sacramento Youth Symphony’s Academic Orchestra, began conducting with SYS in the Fall of 2002. In addition to his youth symphony work, Mr. Moreno has been directing the Davis Schools Secondary Orchestras since 2000. He was Orchestra Director at Emerson Junior High and is currently the director of the Davis Senior High and Holmes Junior High School Orchestra Programs. In 2005, Mr. Moreno was awarded the “Teacher of the Year Award” presented by the CSUS College of Education in recognition of outstanding service to public education. In 2006, he was honored by State Assemblywoman Lois Wolk and given a resolution from the California Legislature recognizing his work in music education. In 2009, The Sacramento News & Review honored Mr. Moreno at the “Jammies” Concert with the “Sacramento Music Educators Outstanding Achievement Award”.
Mr. Moreno has been featured in several national and local area publications including “Symphony Magazine-Online”-2010, “Early Music Magazine”-2010, “Strings Magazine” 2010 and 2012, San Francisco Classical Voice- 2010, In-Tune Magazine- 2010, CMEA Teaching Music Magazine -2010, and the “California Music Educators Association-Online”-2010, for his development of the DHS Baroque Ensemble which is the first group of its kind at the High School level in the country.
In addition, Down Beat Magazine 2010 recognized Mr. Moreno and his Combined Junior High Advanced Orchestra as “Best Classical Ensemble” at the junior high level in a nationwide search. As well, Down Beat Magazine 2011 recognized Mr. Moreno and the Davis Senior High School Symphony Orchestra as “Best Classical Ensemble” at the high school level in a nationwide search.
In the fall of 2011, Mr. Moreno was given the “Harmony in Our Lives Award” for excellence in music education by the Davis Schools Arts Foundation.
In 2012, Down Beat Magazine recognized Mr. Moreno and the Davis Senior High School Symphony Orchestra as “Best Classical Ensemble” at the high school level. In 2012 and most recently in 2013, Down Beat Magazine also named the Holmes Junior High Advanced Orchestra as “Best Classical Ensemble” at the junior high level.
In the fall of 2012, the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) unanimously recognized Mr. Moreno as the state’s Richard L. Levin Orchestra Educator awardee.
In the Springof 2013 The Recording Academy and The GRAMMY Foundation recognized Mr. Moreno as a Quarterfinalists for their first annual Music Educator Award.
In addition to conducting, Mr. Moreno is a professional violinist with an active private teaching studio in Woodland, CA. When not musically preoccupied, Mr. Moreno values spending free time with his wife Scherezada and two daughters Giavanna and Dchenin.
